Pedestrian Deaths On The Rise - Sunday, November 23, 2008

About 12 percent of all motor vehicle accident deaths are pedestrians. Men are more likely than women to die in pedestrian accidents, and people over 64 years of age are more likely victims than younger pedestrians. Most pedestrian deaths occur btween 3 and 6 p.m. and after dark. In 1997, the chances of beng killed in a pedestrian accident was 5.3%. In 2006, the chances had risen to 7.1%. Florida is one of the top five states for the number of pedestrian deaths, averaging more than 2.5 deaths per 100,000 people.
