This summer the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) released a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study that found that cell phone use was a serious hazard to motorists. The study indicated that only 2% of drivers were really capable of safely multi-tasking while driving. Even though it is commonly assumed that hands-free cell phones make driving while using the cell phone safer, the study suggests the opposite. The study suggests that, instead, people listening to a cell phone conversation are slower to respond to things they are actually looking at. Some participants in the study were quicker to apply the brakes in response to situations when they were under the influence of alcohol than when they were talking on the cell phone!
