Halloween is supposed to be fun, but it should also be safe. Using some common sense guidelines and these safety tips, enjoy Halloween safely:
- A responsible adult or teenager should be with kids.
- Kids should go out in groups, preferably limited to four or five members who all know each other.
- If a child thinks he is too old to be accompanied by an adult, he is probably too old to be trick or treating.
- Organized parties are on alternative to trick or treating.
- Incorporate safety into costumes: costumes must allow freedom of movement; use face paint instead of masks to avoid blocking vision; costumes should be either light colored or with reflective material or tape; any accessories should be obvious “imitations” and not reaslistic enough to be mistaken for the real thing.
- Make an extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway.
- Have your children carry emergency identification cards or bracelets.
- At least one person in the group should carry a flashlight.
- Never eat anything until you’re home and the treats have been examined.
- Stay in your own neighborhood and only go to houses that are well lit.
- Keep your distance from strangers.
- Don’t go into a stranger’s house.
- Don’t cross streets except at intersections and look both ways.
- Keep your home’s exterior lights on.
- Keep your pets inside on Halloween night.
- Know where your children are and what their itinerary is.
- Report suspicious activites.
- Do not leave your home unattended on Halloween night.
- Do not invited trick or treaters into your home.
- Avoid dark areas and stay in well lighted areas.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween.
