Real Risk On Halloween: Cars - Friday, October 30, 2009

While parents are well aware of urban myths, legends, or rare realities of razor blades in apples or poisoned candy, the fact is that your child is more likely to be injured by a car when trick or treating than to be poisoned or injured by bad candy. In fact, some news services report that children under 15 years of age are 4.5 times more likely to die in a car crash on Halloween than on any other evening of the year. Most of these accidents occur during trick or treat time, between 4 P.M. and 8 P.M.

  • Make sure no one drinks and drives if you host a Halloween party;
  • Remind your children to "Stop, Look and Listen" when crossing streets;
  • Consider safety when choosing costumes, including nighttime visibility;
  • Consider using reflective tape on costumes;
  • Have your children carry flashlights and trick or treat in groups;
  • Have an adult accompany the children when trick or treating;
  • If you're driving, never assume a pedestrian will yield to your right of way;
  • If you're driving, pay attention for children exiting driveways, sidewalks and medians;
  • If you're driving, stay off your cell phone;
  • If you're driving, stay below the speed limit.

From The Florida Firm, have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Halloween Safety Tips - Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Halloween is supposed to be fun, but it should also be safe. Using some common sense guidelines and these safety tips, enjoy Halloween safely:

  1. A responsible adult or teenager should be with kids.
  2. Kids should go out in groups, preferably limited to four or five members who all know each other.
  3. If a child thinks he is too old to be accompanied by an adult, he is probably too old to be trick or treating.
  4. Organized parties are on alternative to trick or treating.
  5. Incorporate safety into costumes: costumes must allow freedom of movement; use face paint instead of masks to avoid blocking vision; costumes should be either light colored or with reflective material or tape; any accessories should be obvious "imitations" and not reaslistic enough to be mistaken for the real thing.
  6. Make an extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway.
  7. Have your children carry emergency identification cards or bracelets.
  8. At least one person in the group should carry a flashlight.
  9. Never eat anything until you're home and the treats have been examined.
  10. Stay in your own neighborhood and only go to houses that are well lit.
  11. Keep your distance from strangers.
  12. Don't go into a stranger's house.
  13. Don't cross streets except at intersections and look both ways.
  14. Keep your home's exterior lights on.
  15. Keep your pets inside on Halloween night.
  16. Know where your children are and what their itinerary is.
  17. Report suspicious activites.
  18. Do not leave your home unattended on Halloween night.
  19. Do not invited trick or treaters into your home.
  20. Avoid dark areas and stay in well lighted areas.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween.

Defective products are recalled from the market almost every week. All too often, simple consumer products we take for granted are accidents waiting to happen due to poor manufacturing methods, negligent design, careless quality control, and poor inspections. Just recently, the Consumer Products Safety Commission recalled an office chair sold to countless unsuspecting customers of Office Depot. Here at The Florida Firm, we have handled two defective office chair cases in just the past few years. Both accidents were caused by product failures such as seat bracket or other materials failure. Both products were manufactured in China and imported for sale in American stores. Both accidents involved serious injuries like spine injuries and traumatic brain injuries resulting in surgery, decreased mobility, memory loss, loss, decreased cognitive functioning, and hearing loss.

What To Do If You're In An Auto Accident - Friday, October 02, 2009

When you're involved in an auto accident, it can be hard to think straight for most people. But before it happens, commit these tips to memory. First, get medical attention for you and anyone else involved, even if there are no obvious injuries. If you don't feel the effects right away, it often only takes a few minutes or hours to begin to feel some pain or discomfort that was initially masked by your adrenaline flow. Second, call the authorities and have the accident investigated, even if it appears initially to be relatively minor. Without an accident report, there's no public record the accident happened and it could be your word against some unscrupulous motorist. Try to keep a camera in your car, and if you don't have a camera, don't forget that most cell phones have cameras. Take photos of the scene and the vehicles. Finally, get information regarding the other vehicles and drivers, the location of the accident, etc.

If you're hurt in any kind of accident, protect yourself and contact The Florida Firm for a free legal consultation.
