Fall prevention practices is an area that should not be taken lightly or skipped when making a decision. Falls are often not thought of as a serious issue by many people, however, falling is currently the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions for trauma, and injury deaths for older adults. According the Center for Disease Control, accidental falls are responsible for over 30,000 deaths a year, with approximately 1,800 of those deaths being an elderly individual who had a nursing home fall.

In many cases external factors play a major role in an elderly individuals fall. Some of the top causes of falls are due to:

  • Uneven floors or wet areas
  • Clutter on the floor or stairs
  • Loose rugs
  • Unsafe footwear
  • Loose clothing
  • Difficult to reach items
  • Lack of support railings on stairs or in bathrooms

Though all falls are not preventable, many are; making it critical to take the appropriate steps and ensure that your loved ones are in a safe environment.
