Sharp Decrease in Auto Accident Deaths Among Children

Representing Orlando, the Four Corners, Tampa and Nearby Areas of Florida

The number of children 12-years-old or younger killed in auto accidents decreased by more than 40 percent between 2002 and 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in February.

Tragically, at least 9,000 children in that age range were killed during that time span. While the Florida auto accident lawyers at Colling Gilbert Wright & Carter applaud the decrease in child fatalities, we understand that negligence and misconduct will continue to represent a danger to everyone on the road.

The decrease in deaths is likely related to increased awareness of the importance of seatbelts and proper child seat usage. The most tragic detail in the report was likely that one-third of the children who lost their lives were not properly buckled up at the time of their accident.

Our auto accident lawyers always urge drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts. And parents should make sure their children are in the proper safety seat. Doing so will greatly increase everyone’s well-being.
