Pedestrian's are always at risk of being seriously injured by motor vehicles and that is particularly true in Metro Orlando which has historically had higher incidents of pedestrian accidents and deaths. Clermont Child Killed In Halloween Accident - Sunday, November 01, 2009

The Center For Disease Control reports that 4 times as many children between 5 and 14 are killed on Halloween compared to any other time of the year. Unfortunately for a Lake County family, a young boy was killed when attempting to cross State Road 50 while being supervised by and adult on Halloween evening. This family did everything right, it seems, since the child was reportedly crossing the busy road at an intersection with adult supervision. It is critical for drivers to pay special attention when children are out trick or treating or going to other Halloween events.

Real Risk On Halloween: Cars - Friday, October 30, 2009

While parents are well aware of urban myths, legends, or rare realities of razor blades in apples or poisoned candy, the fact is that your child is more likely to be injured by a car when trick or treating than to be poisoned or injured by bad candy. In fact, some news services report that children under 15 years of age are 4.5 times more likely to die in a car crash on Halloween than on any other evening of the year. Most of these accidents occur during trick or treat time, between 4 P.M. and 8 P.M.

  • Make sure no one drinks and drives if you host a Halloween party;
  • Remind your children to "Stop, Look and Listen" when crossing streets;
  • Consider safety when choosing costumes, including nighttime visibility;
  • Consider using reflective tape on costumes;
  • Have your children carry flashlights and trick or treat in groups;
  • Have an adult accompany the children when trick or treating;
  • If you're driving, never assume a pedestrian will yield to your right of way;
  • If you're driving, pay attention for children exiting driveways, sidewalks and medians;
  • If you're driving, stay off your cell phone;
  • If you're driving, stay below the speed limit.

From The Florida Firm, have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Deadly Pedestrian Accidents Are Avoidable - Saturday, June 07, 2008

According to a study by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, 61,000 pedestrians were injured in 2006. In the same year, almost 5,000 pedestrians were killed. Pedestrians account for about 11 percent of all traffic deaths each year.

Many of these accidents are avoidable. For example, running red lights is a huge problem in Central Florida. About half of the deaths from red light running are pedestrians. Speeding is also a major contributing factor, accounting as a factor in 31 percent of all fatal crashes in 2003, for example, according to NHTSA statistics. Speeding is especially serious when a pedestrian is involved, increasing not only the likelihood of hitting a pedestrian, but also the likelihood of death. Needless to say, alcohol is often a contributing factor to such accidents, particularly at night, when most pedestrian accidents occur.

For victims of such accidents, it is important that an attorney be retained promptly to conduct an independent investigation while evidence, such as skid marks and other evidence at the site of an accident, are still fresh. If you or a loved one has been injured, or worse, if a loved one or friend has been the victim of a fatal pedestrian accident or automobile accident, call CGWC, The Florida Firm, for a free consultation.
