Trasylol (generic aprotinin) is used to control bleeding during open heart surgery and to reduce any need for a blood transfusion. If you had open heart surgery, you may not even know you were given Trasylol because it would have been administered while you were under anesthesia.
If you had open heart surgery and then went into shock, had a stroke, kidney failure, or a heart attack, you might have been given Trasylol, and it is possible that Trasylol caused these side effects. Please contact us if you have suffered those medical problems following open heart surgery.
Taking Another Look at Trasylol
The red flag went up for Trasylol in January, 2006 when the New England Journal of Medicine published results of a Trasylol study. The study compared four groups of patients, one of which was given Trasylol, one was given no anti-bleeding drug during their open heart surgery, and two were given generic drugs.
All three groups given bleeding control drugs had less bleeding. But the group on Trasylol had three negative consequences:
- Increased risk of stroke by 181%
- Increased risk of heart failure by 55%
- Doubled risk of kidney failure requiring dialysis
The same month these results were published, the FDA began a safety review of Trasylol. The results of this safety review were discussed in a public meeting of the Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee in September, 2006. A week later, the manufacturer of Trasylol, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, informed the FDA of their own safety study, which had yielded similar results to the one done by the New England Journal of Medicine.
In December, 2006, the FDA instructed Bayer to update their product label with a new warning about these risks, and it limited its Trasylol approval to patients “at increased risk for blood loss and blood transfusion” during open heart surgery.
