For nearly a century, Flag Day has served as a time to honor our nation’s emblem. The law firm of Colling Gilbert Wright will celebrate June 14 by unfurling the flag and proudly displaying the banner of the United States.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the now iconic stars and stripes design as the fledgling country’s flag. Since that time, 37 stars have been added to the upper left quadrant as the U.S.A. grew and thrived.

The flag is more than colorful fabric. It represents the great nation in which we live, and all of the people who make it great. All of our attorneys strive to protect the legal rights of American individuals under state and national law and the U.S. Constitution. We believe the flag is a potent symbol of these rights, and a reminder of our duty to represent our clients according to the ethical principles of U.S. law and the flag for which it stands.

This Flag Day, please join Colling Gilbert Wright in proudly flying our nation’s colors.

Every person who joins the armed forces makes great sacrifices for his or her country. However, some sacrifice everything in defense of our nation’s liberty and way of life. On Memorial Day, Colling Gilbert Wright is proud to join individuals across the United States in saluting the soldiers who laid down their lives, as well as those who returned from their tours of duty.

This year marks the centennial of the famous wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” Composed in 1915 in the midst of World War I, this poem by a Canadian serviceman inspired American humanitarian Moina Michael to start wearing a red poppy in remembrance of fallen soldiers. She also started selling the flower to raise money for those who served.

After being adopted by organizations from the American Legion to groups around the world, the red poppy has since become an international symbol of remembrance for men and women who lost their lives on the battlefield.

No matter how you plan to celebrate Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember the people who gave their lives for our country. Service is a core value embraced by everyone at our Florida law firm, and we thank all of our military men and women for theirs.

It is hard to believe that another year has gone by, but 2015 is almost here. More and more people prefer staying at home to celebrate the New Year because the roads are so dangerous. If you plan to go out on the town, celebrate safely. Here are some tips:

Don’t Drink and Drive

Arrange for transportation BEFORE you go out

Call a cab if you haven’t arranged for transportation and you’ve been drinking

Pace yourself – A good rule of thumb it to drink no more than one beer, mixed drink, or glass of wine each hour.

Drink water in between alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated.

Eat food and snacks while you’re drinking to help absorb alcohol.

Don’t play with fireworks while drinking.

Follow instructions for all fireworks.

Now, Happy New Year! Be safe!

Read more about the Hall of Lawsuit Hypocrites by visiting the Take Justice Back Website. You will be appalled to learn how much these phony tricksters rely upon and benefit from access to the civil justice system while demanding lawmakers make sure you can’t. Don’t let lawsuit hypocrites scam you into giving up your rights while they keep theirs.

Never have three simple words had such power over human emotion. To a child, “back to school” signals the end of summer fun and a return to strict rules and schedules and, worse, homework. For the parent, it’s a chance to breathe and regain some sanity.

By mid-August, most parents are deep into back-to-school preparations. Everyone with a school-aged child knows how hectic it all can be. Between the appointments, paperwork and shopping, it’s a wonder anyone survives. With everything that must be done in such a short period of time, parents often overlook how hard going back to school can be on their child.

Preparing children emotionally for a safe, productive and rewarding school year is just as important as completing all those necessary tasks. Having a heart-to-heart with your student could help them let go of anxiety, develop resiliency and, in turn, make them feel better about going back to school.

Here is a list of suggested topics to tackle:

Ask your child how they feel about returning to school. Discuss their concerns.

Talk about respectful social interactions, peer pressure and bullying.

Go over the school’s handbook. Cover the rules so they know what to expect.

Discuss what your child is expected to learn in his/her grade. Make a general plan for success. Include a daily schedule. Discuss how to balance homework with after-school activity.

Work together to create a dedicated work space.

Go over how your child will get to school. Discuss safety concerns. Make sure your child knows where to go each day. If they are walking, get out for a practice run (or several). Discuss what it means to be a safe pedestrian.

If you have a young child, make sure they know their address and phone number and what to do if they are approached by a stranger.

Establish a firm bedtime schedule and make a plan for sticking to it.

It doesn’t matter how old you are – starting something new can often be nerve-wracking. Having a good talk about it can make a world of difference. So, if you haven’t already, take some time out from that back-to-school madness to reconnect with your children…you will all be better off for it!

Do you have a vacation right around the corner? It’s easy to get so excited about an upcoming trip that you forget common sense steps for your departure. Before you get into vacation mode, follow these five steps:

1. Suspend status updates. Sharing your whereabouts via social media will not only make the Johnsons jealous, but could give delinquents some malicious ideas. For the safety of your whole family, remind your children that vacation status updates aren’t exactly “Facebook appropriate.”

2. Employ neighbors. Find a close neighbor that you can ask to keep an eye on the house. Or reach out to a good friend to house sit while you’re gone. Paying a house sitter is easier than dealing with the insurance company after a robbery.

3. Stop deliveries. If your mailbox is stuffed and newspapers are stacking up on the driveway, you might as well put a sign in the yard that says “No one is home.” It’s easier to freeze mail delivery or have a neighbor retrieve your mail while you’re gone.

4. Lock ’em up. Invest in a safe for all heirlooms and valuables. Your insurance company can never replace something with sentimental value. Also, make sure firearms and weapons are locked in a safe at all times, especially when you are on vacation.

5. Turn it off. Make sure anything that has to do with water or electricity is unhooked, unplugged or turned off. An unplanned fire or flood is not what you want to return home to after a relaxing vacation.

Place this checklist in all your suitcases or travel bags so you have it on hand as soon as the packing begins. We wish you safe travels. If our firm can be of any assistance in protecting you, your loved ones or your property, please don’t hesitate to call us.

Last week, the Florida Supreme Court struck a blow for justice. The former Chief Justice Fred Lewis wrote a lengthy opinion debunking the “medical malpractice crisis” as a myth having no foundation in fact today, if ever, and invalidating damage caps on noneconomic damages in medical negligence cases. First, the Supreme Court found caps on economic damages of medical malpractice victims in wrongful death cases to be arbitrary and bearing no rational relationship to the alleged purpose sought to be addressed by the damage caps, i.e. the supposed “medical malpractice crisis”. The Court said the damages cap imposed unfair and illogical burdens on victims of medical malpractice causing wrongful death and that multiple victims in a single case do not receive the same rights to full compensation because of the arbitrary reduction of their claims. The Supreme Court also analyzed the legislative history of the purported “medical malpractice crisis” and found that the existence of a medical malpractice crisis was “dubious and questionable at best” and specifically found some legislative findings regarding the enactment of the statute to be unsupported by the legislative record itself.

The fight for equal justice for all will never end. There will always be monied special interests lobbying for special privileges under the law. Trial attorneys like us will never stop fighting to level the playing field for powerless against the powerful. Last week was rare beacon for justice that we are proud to share on our blog.
