Safety Is Everyones Responsibility
Liberty Mutual has some television advertisements airing nowadays with the theme that safety is everyone’s responsibility. They call it the Responsibility Project. It’s true. Everyday we work, walk, or drive out into the world we trust that others will be responsible and obey rules to keep us and our families safe from injury. When people don’t obey those rules, they violate that trust, whether it’s running a red light, neglecting to warn of a known danger at a place of business, giving a patient the wrong dose, or operating on the wrong body part. Breaking these rules is a betrayal of trust, a shirking of the responsibility to conduct oneself safely.
In the end, safety is indeed everyone’s responsibility. When that trust is betrayed, it is jurors who have the responsibility to send the message that the rules must be followed and that those who violate them will be held accountable. It is a solemn responsibility and a privilege. If we want a safe society, safety is indeed everyone’s responsibility.
