Don’t Wreck the Holidays: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving

The holiday season is right around the corner and as Americans prepare for festivities with family and friends, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to remind all drivers of the dangers of driving after drinking.

This year’s Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving campaign aims to inform the public about the dangers of drinking and driving, regardless of the amount. Though you may think you are ok to drive if you are just buzzed, you aren’t. The campaign will run through December 15th with the help of  local law enforcement agencies who are working with NHTSA to spread the message: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.

Drunk driving is one of the top killers on our roads. In 2013, there were 10,076 people killed in drunk driving crashes in the United States, which accounts for one third of all crash fatalities. This time of year is especially dangerous due to holiday celebrations and frequent parties. 733 of those people killed in crashes that involved at least one drunk driver or motorcycle operator occurred in the month of December.

This  holiday season, NHTSA urges everyone to plan ahead and designate a sober driver or find an alternate mode of transportation. If you plan on drinking at all, don’t assume that you’ll be able to determine whether you can safely drive or not at the end of the night.

Follow these safety tips this holiday season to help keep our roads safe and prevent a DUI:

  • If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving.  Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
  • When you know you’ll be drinking, leave your keys at home or give them to someone else.
  • If you have been drinking, do not drive—even a short distance. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
  • If you see someone you think is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them get home safely.
