The High Cost of Car Crashes
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study of 2010 motor vehicle crashes and entitled it “The Economic and Societal Impact of Motor Vehicle Crashes 2010″. In the study, it is reported that almost 33,000 people lost their lives in automobile accidents in 2010 and another 3.9 million occupants and pedestrians were injured. The study estimated economic losses alone to have exceeded 270 Billion Dollars and over 500 Billion Dollars in harm due to deaths, pain, and loss of quality of life. NHTSA’s study blames distracted drivers, speeding and driving under the influence as the biggest causes of accidents.
