Byetta and Januvia Lawyers

The FDA has recently opened a review of Byetta and Januvia to investigate claims of pancreatitis linked to use of these medications. Pancreatitis is most commonly marked by severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and can lead to pancreatic cancer if not treated.

Januvia belongs to the class of diabetes medications called DPP-4 inhibitors. By blocking DPP-4, Januvia helps incretin remain in the blood for longer periods of time, thereby stimulating the pancreas to make more insulin.

Byetta is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. By controlling the responsiveness of beta cells in the pancreas, increasing first-phase insulin response, stopping excess glucagon secretion during times of hyperglycemia, and slowing gastric emptying after meals, it has shown to be effective alone or in combination with DPP-4 inhibitors at regulating sugar levels.

Both of these potentially dangerous medications have been shown to increase risks for acute pancreatitis. Januvia is also linked to increased risks for pancreatic cancer, while Byetta may cause damage to the kidneys and thyroid. Tragically, the side effects from Both Januvia and Byetta may be fatal.

If you or a loved one has suffered serious side effects while on Byetta or Januvia, please contact Colling Gilbert Wright online or call (407) 712-7300 today to schedule a free consultation with one of our experienced Florida pharmaceutical injury attorneys.

Understanding Your Risks

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a study in 2013 showing patients taking Januvia and Byetta doubled their risks for acute pancreatitis. However, the dangers of these drugs was known long before that. In fact, in 2007, two reports were released concerning the link between these medications and pancreatic damage. In one, risks were found to increase 6-fold while on Byetta and Januvia.

Yet despite these known risks, Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb failed to properly warn patients. A failure that has resulted in no small number of serious injuries and fatalities.

Drug companies have a responsibility to warn patients of potential risks as soon as they are known. When they fail to do so, they may become liable for any damages their medications cause. If you have been diagnosed with pancreatitis or a loved one has died from complications after taking Byetta or Januvia, the experienced pharmaceutical negligence attorneys at The Florida Firm are prepared to take your case, fight for your rights, and help you receive compensation for all of your damages.
