RV Tire Defect Attorneys

One of the most dangerous situations when traveling in a recreational vehicle (RV) is tire failure. Maintaining proper inflation and replacing aged or worn tires are essential to preventing a blowout. When new RVs are sold equipped with faulty tires, consumers are unaware of the danger, and the results can be deadly.

Different models of tires are designed to handle specific speeds of travel and weight loads. When the wrong tire is installed on a vehicle, tread separation and tire blowouts can easily occur, even with new tires and proper inflation.

The Goodyear G159 275/70 22.5 tire was not designed or tested for use on RVs, but RV manufacturers installed the tires from about 1995 or 1996 though 2004 because Goodyear recommended the tire for large RVs. The tire was originally designed to carry less weight. This overload on the tires results in extra stress and heat on the belts, causing tread separation. Although there have been some limited recall and replacement programs, the G159 is still on the market and still on thousands of RVs.

When RV tires fail, the results can be catastrophic. Tire failure in any vehicle can cause the driver to lose control and can result in an accident. When an RV goes out of control, it is much more difficult to recover than a standard size vehicle. Deadly rollovers are not uncommon when RV tires fail. Common results of RV accidents include:

  • Head trauma
  • Brain injury
  • Neck fractures
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Paralysis
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Internal injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Suffocation
  • Coma
  • Death

Although Goodyear and many RV manufacturers have been aware of the danger of the G159 for many years, most RV drivers have not been alerted, and many are still driving RVs equipped with the defective tires. This poses a risk to RV drivers and occupants as well as other vehicles who may become involved in an accident with an out-of-control RV.
