2015 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
In 2006, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization launched World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse has been a growing financial and social concern so spreading awareness is imperative to help stop this increasing issue. Elder abuse can take many forms, nursing home abuse and negligence being a common form of this abuse. If you believe that you or someone you love is experiencing nursing home negligence in the Orlando region, contact Colling Gilbert Wright & Cater at (407) 712-7300 for a free case review.
Elder abuse is a significant public health and human rights issue. There are over half a million reports of elder abuse each year, with many more cases going unreported. A 2010 study found the incidence rate to be nearly 24 times greater than the number of cases that are actually reported or referred to social services, legal authorities, or law enforcement.
Many times seniors are being harmed by those who are supposed to be responsible for their care and others in contact with them are not trained to know the signs of abuse if it is occurring. We encourage all individuals to take a stand against elder abuse and protect seniors by helping to raise awareness within their communities and to take action if they believe abuse may be occurring.
