Federal Assistance Available For Pedestrian Safety Awareness
The U.S. government has earmarked $ 2,000,000 to go to the cities in the nation with the highest pedestrian fatality rates. This money is to be used for pedestrian safety enforcement, education and awareness programs. Already, the National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration has created a website devoted to pedestrian safety and awareness. The NHTSA website can be found at Everyone Is A Pedestrian. The site has tips for parents and caregivers, children and aging adults. There are also guides for teachers, educators, and consumer safety advocates.
According to the NHTSA, over 4400 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2011. Locally in Central Florida, we all know that Metro Orlando won the dubious distinction of being on the top most dangerous cities in the U.S. for pedestrians. Hopefully, local legislators will be taking advantage of this federal program to bring pedestrian safety awareness to Central Florida as a reality.
