Meningitis Outbreak From Tainted Steroids
More than 17,700 patients across the country were recently administered a contaminated steroid shot for the treatment of back, neck or shoulder pain. The tainted steroids have been tracked across 23 states – including Florida. So far, outbreaks of fungal meningitis related to the shot and several fatalities have occurred in 10 states, including:
Florida
Indiana
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
New Jersey
North Carolina
Ohio
Tennessee
Virginia
If you, or a loved one, recently received a steroid injection for the treatment of back, neck or shoulder pain, please watch for potential signs and symptoms of fungal meningitis. These include, but are not limited to:
Headache
Fever
Dizziness
Weakness
Sensitivity to Light
Loss of Balance
Nausea
Stiff Neck
Stroke
Stroke-like symptoms (such as difficulty finding words, numbness or weakness)
Fungal meningitis may require weeks or months of hospitalization and treatment. And, sadly, survivors of this terrible disease can experience permanent neurologic damage. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we encourage you to first contact your medical clinic to confirm whether or not you received a contaminated shot.
If you think you have been exposed to the tainted steroid, you may need to do the following:
1. Have evaluation performed by an infectious disease doctor.
2. Begin treatment for fungal meningitis.
3. Contact an experienced attorney to assist you with processing your claim.
