Serious Byetta and Januvia Side Effects
Byetta and Januvia, the popular diabetes medications, are now the subject of an FDA review. Following an alarming number of reports linking these type-2 diabetes medications to pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, the FDA is considering steps that could help reduce future problems.
Byetta and Januvia are often used together to regulate sugar levels in people with type-2 diabetes. However, even when used as stand-alone solutions, these dangerous medications can lead to serious health risks and even death.
Doubled Risk for Pancreatitis
In February 2013, researchers from Johns Hopkins published a study showing people on Byetta and Januvia saw risks for pancreatitis double while taking the medications. This report came six years after similar studies had shown risks for pancreatic damage including hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis were much higher while on Byetta and Januvia. That information prompted the FDA to issue warnings about the drugs, but did not convince the manufacturers to take steps to further protect patients.
