Tired Drivers May be More Dangerous than Drunk Drivers
As part of a new UK Television show, three women underwent an interesting experiment. The participants – a 35 year-old who regularly gets eight to nine hours of sleep a night, a 27 year-old who was one-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit, and a 38 year-old mother of three who generally gets five to six hours of sleep a night – were placed in a driving simulator where their eye movements were monitored and recorded. Researchers found that, over a 65km (40.4 mile) stretch of highway, the tired driver spent 10 percent more time with her eyes closed than the drunk driver.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests that tired drivers account for 10,000 auto accidents every year, causing 40,000 injuries and 1,550 deaths.
