You may have developed vision problems after taking a prescribed semaglutide drug, such as Ozempic, Rybelsus, or Wegovy. In some cases, you could even experience a rare eye condition that can lead to blindness after taking these medications.
Our experienced mass tort attorneys at Colling Gilbert Wright are currently interviewing potential candidates for participation in an Ozempic vision loss lawsuit. If you suffered harm due to the manufacturer’s inadequate warnings about possible side effects, you could receive compensation for your injuries.
What Semaglutide Drugs Do
Ozempic is an injectable form of the synthetic hormone semaglutide, which regulates hunger. If you have type 2 diabetes, it can be effective in reducing your blood sugar levels. The drug can also reduce the risk of some serious health complications associated with type 2 diabetes, such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Ozempic can also help you lose weight. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Ozempic only for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, weight loss is a common off-label use of the medication. If you are living with obesity, you may receive Wegovy, which the FDA has approved for weight loss and contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic in a higher dose.
The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, warns that vision abnormalities are a potential side effect. Our attorneys working on this case are investigating whether the company’s warnings were sufficient to inform you and other patients about the potential risk of blindness associated with taking Ozempic and similar drugs. We are determining whether the company was aware of, and failed to disclose, the potential seriousness of this risk.
What Is the Connection Between Semaglutide and Vision Loss?
If you have diabetes, you are already at risk for diabetic retinopathy, a condition that damages the blood vessels in the retina. Ozempic may worsen this condition or increase the risk of developing it.
In 2024, Harvard researchers published a study in JAMA Ophthalmology that detected a strong association between semaglutide drugs and a rare eye disease called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can cause sudden, permanent vision loss in one eye. According to the study, patients taking Ozempic or similar semaglutide drugs were up to seven times more likely to develop NAION compared to those not taking these medications. Although NAION is already a known risk for people with diabetes, the findings suggest that the risk is significantly heightened for patients using semaglutide.
If you developed serious vision problems after taking Ozempic or another form of semaglutide, contact one of our lawyers at The Florida Firm about taking legal action. We could discuss the latest clinical research on these drugs and their impact on eye health, review your symptoms or diagnosis, and consider your options for pursuing compensation from the manufacturer.
Lawsuits Seeking Compensation From Ozempic’s Manufacturer
Numerous patients who experienced vision loss or other complications from semaglutide drugs have filed lawsuits against the manufacturer. In February 2024, the federal courts consolidated these cases, creating a mass tort case, also known as a multidistrict litigation. This procedure enables injured plaintiffs to combine their resources and collaborate to demonstrate that the manufacturer distributed a defective and dangerous drug. At the same time, each plaintiff retains the opportunity to prove their individual damages.
The Mass Tort Process
Mass torts are cost-effective and efficient because only a select few representative cases are chosen to proceed to trial. These are called bellwether cases. The outcome of the bellwether cases determines whether the defendant will settle the case with all the parties.
If the jurors accept the plaintiffs’ evidence in the bellwether cases and find that Nova Nordisk’s warnings were insufficient, the manufacturer may decide to settle all of the cases. Each plaintiff can then present proof of the specific harm the drug caused them. Our attorneys could collect and present documentation of your vision loss, but there is no need for you to be actively involved in the Ozempic trials unless your case is selected as a bellwether case.
Time Limits To Join the Lawsuit
The time limit to file a lawsuit depends on your state of residence. According to Florida Statutes § 95.11, residents of the Sunshine State have two years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit. If you are a resident of another state, we could review your state’s law to determine whether you have a viable claim.

Ozempic is effective in reducing the risk of complications associated with diabetes, and you may have successfully used it to lose weight. However, the side effects can be severe, and it is possible you would not have taken a semaglutide drug if you had known you were risking your vision.
